The Kindness Podcast Interview

Nicole J. Philips from The Kindness Podcast interviewed me about Smiles From Drew and the loss of a child. I found that interview was great way for me to talk about Drew. As well as, all the things Smiles From Drew has done and wants to do in the future. I was so excited to get the chance to tell the story of Drew and what he means to me.

Nicole J. Philips is the host of The Kindness Podcast, and writes a weekly column called Kindness is Contagious, which runs in newspapers in North Dakota and Minnesota. Nicole also happens to be the author of two books, Kindness is Contagious: 100 Stories to Remind You God is Good and So are Most People and Kindness is Courageous: 100 Stories to Remind You People Are Brave + Kind.

If you are going to get hooked on a podcast, The Kindness Podcast is the best one, although I may be biased. The podcast lets you hear about so many amazing people doing amazing things. People that are just trying to spread love and kindness along their path in life. The great thing about podcasts is you can listen to them anywhere. in fact, I like to listen to them on the way to work after I drop Molly off to school. And the best part, I get to hear about things that interest me. There are just times, I don’t feel like listening to the same thing over and over.

If are new to Smiles From Drew, then please take a listen to podcast. You can listen to why I do all that I do for the kids in my community. You can like our Facebook page and don’t forget to share. However, without the support from people like you, we could not be helping these children find their passion. Ultimately, it is you, Smiles From Drew supporters that keep us going. Thank you.

14 Days of Joy 2019

14 Days of Joy is an awesome project I started to help me get through the 2 weeks before the “anniversary” of Drew’s death. It’s a strange thing for me because I do not want to “celebrate” this date, but it’s part of our story and I need to own it. Over the last 4 years, I have found that doing this project is the only way I can get through the days till the worst day of my whole life.

People ask me what does 14 day of joy mean? What do we have to do? It’s going to be something different for everyone. That is the great thing about this project, there is no right or wrong way to do it. You may be just needing to remind yourself that joy can come from the small things like saying good morning to someone in line in front of you. Joy could be holding a door open for someone, especially if they are not right behind you. Joy can come from going for a walk and listening to the birds to clear your head.

I and my family try to do one thing everyday for the 14 Days of Joy. We get the whole family involved and everyone gets to help with our plans of joy.

Over the last 3 years we have….

  • Passed out popsicles on a hot summer day.
  • Taken flowers to strangers at a local nursing home.
  • Passed out gift cards to people that were standing in line at a fast-food restaurant.
  • Helped neighbors clean their yards.
  • Send handwritten notes to people to show we care.
  • Taken cookies to the fire station.
  • Donated toys and art items to our local children’s ward at the hospital.
  • And many more things!

The list is endless as to what you can do to bring joy to you and others. The important part is doing something from the heart. I ask when you do an act of joy post on social media with the hashtag #14daysofjoy2019, that way we can keep track of all the wonderful things that are happening for this project. It would make my heart so happy if we could get the hashtag #14daysofjoy2019 going viral.

One of our BIG joys this year will be a Painting in the Park. I will have tables and paint supplies set up so the kids that come to the park can have a fun afternoon of art! We will be doing this on July 27, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Swan Park in Santa Fe, NM. Please come on down and have fun with us.

14 Days of Joy 2018

14 Days of Joy is a personal project of mine that I started to help me get through the 2 weeks before Drew’s death. I spend those 14 days doing things for others so that I can feel better. This is my 3rd year doing this and we have so many things going on.

  • Saturday July 28 is our last day for the Savers Fundrive. We will be dropping off our donations at 4:00 p.m. So if you have donations contact us and we can come up with a way to get them.
  • Throughout the 14 Days of Joy we have teamed up with my friend Katherine Kyte who is a Lularoe Clothing Consulutant to give away 3 Lularoe Joy vests. Go to our Facebook page Smiles From Drew and nominate someone or even yourself why you need some joy in your life. You can also join Katherine’s Facebook page at Kat’s Unicorn Shop
  • Wednesday August 1 at 6:00 p.m. my friend Monika Mckenna has helped me put on a Free make and take essential oil get together. We will be making  roller ball bottles of essential oils to help with grief. We will be meeting at the South-side Library in Santa Fe. Please RSVP on our Facebook page or message me so we can make sure we have enough supplies.
  • Thursday August 2 we will be meeting my friend Tamara Martinez at Christus St. Vincent to drop off items for the pediatric ward at the hospital. If you would like to donate just message me. They are in need of coloring books, crayons, markers, books, toys, games, puzzles, cuddly toys, and video game systems. We would love for people to come with us to drop off the donations.

Go Spread Some Joy!!!!!!

Smiles From Drew Carnival

Saturday April 28, 2018 Smiles From Drew will be organizing a small carnival at the Santa Fe AABC opening ceremonies. We will have some booths with games, prizes and face painting. Come on out and support Smiles From Drew while knocking down some cans or “fishing” for some ducks!

These events are so important to the success of Smiles. We are completely dependent on the generosity of our donors and supporters. Without you, we would not be able to help the kids.
We can still use donations of prizes or game supplies and as always we could always use more volunteers to make this a great event. If you would like to donate or volunteer please contact Sharon at 505-204-0418 or smilesfromdrew@gmail.com. You can click ♥ HERE ♥ for the volunteer sign up sheet.
